STARS OVER THE FLOWER TABLE
In the supermarket, making small decisions among vegetables and fruit I buy some flowers. Great buds wrapped in paper, huddled against the cold and damp. At home setting them in water in the warmth and light of my workshop and for no reason I mark out a rich blue arc. In the afternoon, once I have finished hoovering the stairs, I return to the heart of my painting and block in a pink for rosebuds. Or possibly not. I’m not here to force any issues. By then a visible unfurling has begun. Over the next day great trumpets appear, stamens burst out of petals, uncontrollable awakenings push out and I am left breathless like a runner trying to catch up. Given a chance nature has none of my doubts.
